Frank

Frank got a spinal cord injury just after he left high school. He was injured in a gang shooting. Frank decided to change his life. He left the gangs, and made a good life with his girlfriend and son. He was careful to prevent pressure ulcers (which is what a doctor or nurse calls pressure sores or bedsores). When things were hard in his family, though, Frank didn't work so hard to prevent pressure ulcers. He got a pressure ulcer. Frustrated by how long he needed to be in the hospital afterwards, Frank decided to go back to being careful to prevent pressure ulcers.

Frank took good care of himself after his spinal cord injury. He did not have any problems for six years. Then Frank started having problems with his family. He got stressed out. He got depressed. Frank stopped checking his skin. He said:

"I got a little careless at the end, I guess.... I had a lot of problems at the time. I remember I had the attitude I didn't care at the time. I stop even treating myself a little bit and I paid for it."

Frank got a little pressure ulcer. It got worse. He needed to have surgery.

Frank was depressed and mad about fighting with his family. Frank's girlfriend saw he had a small pressure ulcer. Frank didn't do anything about it. The pressure ulcer got bigger. It made Frank very sick. Frank had to have surgery. Now Frank is very careful. He checks his skin two times every day. He eats good food. He uses an alarm on his watch to take pressure off his skin every 15 minutes. Now Frank does not get pressure ulcers!

Frank was stressed out about problems with his family. He stopped checking his skin. He got a pressure ulcer. He said:

A broken cushion can hurt you. Frank had a gel cushion. It broke. He couldn't get a new one right away. The insurance people said he had to wait a few weeks. Frank used a foam cushion while he waited. He got a pressure ulcer. This is what Frank said about cushions:

"See, everybody's body made different. Some people sit on different types of cushions, different types of weight, different types of build or whatever."

Frank's experience can teach a lesson. Good equipment doesn't work when it gets worn out. Good equipment doesn't work when it breaks. Get new equipment fast when you need it.

Frank and Robert both believed that God spared their lives for a reason. They believed they were supposed to do something special with their lives.

Frank likes to eat a lot of protein. He sees that protein helps his skin. Eating protein makes Frank's skin stronger. Eating protein helps Frank's skin heal faster when there is a red spot. A red spot can be an early pressure ulcer.

Frank has a different way to take care of his skin. He wears a watch with an alarm. Frank sets the alarm to remind him to take pressure off his skin. Frank needs to take pressure off a couple times an hour.

Frank does a lot of healthy things. He checks his skin every day for pressure ulcers. He has a watch with an alarm in it. Frank uses the alarm to tell him every 15 minutes that it is time to take pressure off his skin; this is called a pressure relief. He eats healthy food. Frank does all these healthy things, but he has not been able to quit smoking.

Frank lived with his brother for a few months. Frank moved with his girlfriend and baby to their own home. Their new neighborhood was not as nice. They felt more independent in their own home.
